Faculty of Correctional Pedagogy and Special Psychology

All over the world, the number of children with disabilities (HH) who need special conditions for learning, education and development, which can only be provided by specially trained professionals, increases every year. The demand for specialists in this field is very high, and at the moment, medical institutions, social assistance institutions, preschool and school institutions need professionals.

Currently, specialists in preschool and school education can obtain special knowledge and qualifications as a “Special Defectologist”: educators, primary school teachers, psychologists, medical workers, parents, that is, all participants in the inclusive (joint) education of children with disabilities and children with normal development . In addition, graduates of schools and colleges can study at the faculty. Moreover, graduates of specialized secondary educational institutions can count on a shortened form of education.

The Faculty of Correctional Pedagogy and Special Psychology trains specialists to work with different categories of children with deviations in psychophysical development: with speech, intelligence, hearing, vision, musculoskeletal disorders, with mental retardation, and behavioral disorders.

    To be able to carry out differential diagnostics of children with developmental disabilities, students are taught methods of examining children in order to determine a specific disorder. In this regard, normal physical, mental, mental and speech development is studied in depth.

    Students master special techniques for determining deviations from the norm of development. Moreover, in parallel with mastering theoretical knowledge, students are given the opportunity to visit special preschool institutions for children with various developmental disabilities in order to gain ideas about the use of diagnostic techniques in practice. These include methods of professional work with children with speech, intelligence, hearing, vision, musculoskeletal disabilities, mental retardation, emotional-volitional disorders, and behavioral difficulties.

    Students undergo mandatory active correctional pedagogical practice as a speech therapist, oligophrenopedagogist, typhlopedagogist, teacher of the deaf and educational psychologist in special institutions for children with various developmental disabilities, each type of practice lasts from 2 to 4 weeks depending on the form of training.

    Starting from the second year, students complete coursework on a chosen topic and in the last year complete their studies by preparing and defending a final qualifying thesis.

Classes with students are conducted by highly qualified teachers - professors and associate professors of the faculty. Leading experts from different universities in Moscow are invited to give lectures on individual disciplines: MPGU, Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, Moscow State Pedagogical University named after. M.A. Sholokhov, Institute of Correctional Pedagogy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, etc.

At the faculty, students are actively involved in research work. Student research groups have been organized in all sections of correctional pedagogy and special psychology, which helps students in writing coursework and final qualifying papers. Many students actively take part in scientific interuniversity conferences and student competitions and have scientific publications. After receiving a bachelor's degree, students can continue their studies in the faculty's master's program in the direction of "Special (defectological) education."

Graduates of the faculty receive the right to work:

    In special institutions for children with various developmental disabilities

    In children's educational institutions, in psychological, medical and pedagogical commissions

    In orphanages

    In children's clinics and hospitals

    For each of the disciplines of the professional cycle, the educational portal contains recordings of video lectures by the Institute’s teachers, which present the most important/difficult parts of the discipline being studied.

    An important component of the educational process is online lectures And teacher seminars which take place using technology webinars. In real time, teachers together with students discuss educational material, analyze problematic case situations, etc. After the end of the class, all participants have the opportunity to repeatedly view the webinar recording. And those who were unable to attend the online event will get acquainted with the content of the lesson.

The main condition for admission to a master's program is the presence of already completed higher education in a bachelor's or specialty program (for example, in a specialty).

You must pass a written interdisciplinary exam in defectology and an oral interview.
Full-time study will be completed within a 2-year period, full-time and part-time forms will require preparation for 2.5 years.

A specialist-defetologist bears a large social burden and is very useful for society, combining the activities of a teacher, psychologist and partly a physician. Persons capable of dedication should pay attention to the specialty.

Brief description of the specialty

Defectology is divided into several areas: work with children and persons with impaired vision, hearing, speech, intelligence or physical health. A specialist can advise children with mild disabilities, assess speech and phonetics, or select complex cases and people who will need to be accompanied throughout their lives.

Advantages of Master's Degree Studies

The specialty is heuristic and scientific-practical; research work is very important for it. The master's program will teach research methodology and theory. Ideas about correction and the causes of health deviations are constantly changing, so constant training should accompany a teacher-defectologist.

Large universities in Moscow

Good specialists are produced by:

  • Moscow City Pedagogical University;
  • Capital State Pedagogical University;
  • Russian State Social University;
  • and several more capital educational institutions.

Subjects studied by students

Regardless of their specialization, students study blocks of psychological, medical and special disciplines, defectology and its medical and biological foundations, speech therapy, children's psychocorrection, and psychodiagnostics of people with disabilities.

Gained knowledge and skills

Universities will teach students the following:

  • diagnose disorders (auditory, speech, psychological, intellectual, musculoskeletal), develop a correction scheme;
  • analyze medical data to make a diagnosis;
  • know different correction methods, and use them to carry out rehabilitation, training and socialization;
  • be able to evaluate the results of work;
  • develop social rehabilitation programs;
  • provide consultation and psychological assistance to families with children with disabilities.

Who to work with

Specialties related to correction:

  • speech pathologist;
  • teacher of the deaf;
  • speech therapist;
  • correction or psychocorrection teacher;
  • oligophrenopedagogue;
  • typhlopedagogue.

The salary depends on the chosen profile: speech therapists are in demand on the market and can count on an average income of 40 thousand rubles, psychologists and teachers earn less. Society is aimed at developing tolerance; there is hope for greater demand and income for such specialists.

Continuing training in the specialty

The direction implies constant self-development, readiness for improvement and scientific work. If a specialist is interested in a specific area of research, it makes sense for him to enroll in graduate school at the Department of Psychology and develop a dissertation on the chosen issue.
